Sheng Dan Kuai Le!
Christmas approaches and Jared remains at home. I hope saying that does not curse it. We have not enjoyed a holiday together this year so we are timidly looking forward to this one. Monday may see a short trip out until Wednesday but short trips have often morphed into long trips. We are holding our breath.
Our tree for the year is beautiful. This is why having someone else do the tree for me is an appealing idea. Storing the ornaments to use only once per year is a bit much. We have certain ornaments that we keep but it is not near what is on the tree. We do save some space though. Mizu is like any cat and plays with anything low on the tree so we keep the bottom sparse with only a few baubles for her to bat around. It preserves the rest of the tree. June is fascinated by the tree. Especially when the house lights are off and only the tree is lit. She will watch the lights sparkle until she falls asleep. It seems the tree is a good baby sitter for when I need do some task about the house.
Shopping is done but we still await arrival of packages. We are guaranteed delivery before Christmas but I believe everyone knows the anxiety of arrivals being so close. We (I) should have ordered them sooner. It is only that I did not see them sooner. One of the packages is a diaper bag for Jared. He does not care for the "girlie" bag I carry so I have gotten him a "tactical diaper bag" from Tactical Baby Gear so he does not somehow feel emasculated carrying mine. I have warned him though; it will be his responsibility to maintain the supplies in his bag.
Here is crossing fingers hoping Jared's trip out will return as scheduled and he remains home until after Christmas, though after the new year would be better.
We enjoyed another good day yesterday. We spent the afternoon at Mikasa Park. The park is named for an the old Japanese battleship name Mikasa. It is a large ship but not as large as modern ships. Still, it is interesting to see.
Chao lei was most fascinated by it. He asked MANY questions of the tour guide. She was very patient with his lack of command of Japanese. Fortunately, she spoke English as well. Chao lei remained insistent of using what Japanese he knows, using English only as a last resort. I applaud him in his reasoning; our guide was in her country. Why should she speak English? He amazes me sometimes.
The Japanese are very fond of their museums which made it surprising that they were so empty. I suppose it can be blamed on CoVid but it still strikes me as odd since masks are a matter of normal practice for many people in Japan if only for the sometimes heavy pollution or perceived threat of illness.
The museum is free, which is a good price. lol Most important was Chao lei enjoyed it. Mostly. Some parts were very boring for him. We could knew this because he was not shy in telling us so. Seeing the daily living items of people past did not much interest him.
Now that the major exercises are complete, Jared is applying for leave. It is not that there are many places we could travel to but that is not his plan. We are going to spend time together to make up for the time he was away.
The officially observed Thanksgiving was enjoyable for us at home. We had our solo sailor. She proved to be very likeable and someone whom I would enjoy knowing better. Chao lei apparently likes her company. Where she was he was the entire day. For someone with no children, she was very adept in her understanding of what Chao lei was doing. The only thing our day was missing was Jared.
To have memories of family holidays, we enjoyed a second Thanksgiving when Jared returned. It is tiring to prepare two holiday meals so close together. lol We had the traditional dinner that most would recognize but again we had some of my favorite foods included. Jared and I both enjoy blending our heritage where we can. We had the turkey of course but with a twist. It was prepared Cantonese style with hoisin sauce, sweet bean sauce, garlic, shallot, ginger, and stuffed with tangerine peels. There were also guotie (pot stickers) and honey-hoisin sweet potatoes. No one may acuse us of being normal I suppose.
If Jared gets his leave, we will remain home and be together. We will hike where we may, together. Together is the operating word in all we will do. Winter is not the best time to make our memories but we will make them when we can. Spring will arrive soon enough and hopefully we will be past all the restrictions, or at least, past many of them. We will depend heavily on the MWR office to discover activities we can do.
We had a short scare with June and this shows importance of communication. It seems Chao lei was lazy to get a cup and got a bottle instead and filled it with milk. Cow milk. Since he did not finish it, he placed it in the fridge. Jared, thinking it was June's bottle, heated it and put a nipple on it instead of waking me to feed her. Junes little belly swelled and she was in obvious discomfort so I took her to the pediatrician where, upon her vomiting, we discovered she was full of milk. We also discovered she is lactose intolerant to the extreme. The following diapers were not fun.
Now Jared knows, I do not express milk to a bottle unless I am going out. I certainly do not leave the bottle open in the fridge when I do. Chao lei knows he is not to use a bottle again unless I or his father send him for one. June has returned to her normally happy self. All is well now. Jared has sworn he will ask questions whenever he is going to do anything with June. He feels guilt for having been the one who gave the cow milk. For such a strong man, he can be such a softie.
Once again there will be a holiday without Jared. At least, he will not be here for the proper day. we have planned our family day for after the ship's return. Meanwhile, we will also observe Thursday. I could not bear the thought of not doing so for at least one sailor that is alone. I will have a female Lieutenant as a guest. I will also host Dorothy since her husband is away also. Poor Chao lei will be surrounded by females for the day. lol
I have been required to stand in for a couple of professors as they have been out ill. They were not covid but in today's environment, the administration takes no chances. I am almost afraid to sneeze or cough for fear I will be tested yet again. If tests were vaccines, I would be immune to everything for having been subjected to so many; five so far. I pray that I do not contract flu again.
I watch the news. The news sources are always talking about how the government is taking sexual harassment seriously. I hear admirals speaking of how it is a very serious subject and there is no tolerance for it. I hear of sexual harassment training in the base paper. I have been told it is a mandatory class in basic training. If all of these things are true, why does sexual harassment remain? I am not speaking of simple or minor missteps. There will always be small things that are not worth being offended for. I am speaking of overt "in your face" sexual harassment.
Yesterday, a young sailor (I assume sailor as he was in civilian clothes and on a naval base) said to me "You are a hot little thing. You look like you would be fun. Want to spend some time with me?" The look on his face made me very uncomfortable. Even Chao lei moved to a place between him and me, his behavior was so blatant. What would he have done without my children being present?
Has this person somehow escaped all of the training? Why does he believe this behavior would be acceptable to any woman. I have thought of reporting this to CFAY but without a name I believe it would be a fruitless endeavor. I have never been uncomfortable while on base as I was in that moment. In fact, I still find myself looking for that face again to avoid it or perhaps see something that would identify him. Jared has certainly been told of this event though there is little he can do at sea. It is not as the time I was called "a little bfm", (which I still do not know what it is), when Jared was present and he did not respond well to it.
I am more conscious now of where I am and who is near. Not afraid, just more aware. More aware is good anyway.
I was reminded to make my appointment for my tree for this year. I pay someone to set up and decorate my Christmas tree. I know, it is lazy of me to do this but after the first I was spoiled. The reminder was timely. It would seem the woman I have used in the past has been discovered and her time fills up quickly. When I called to schedule she had only three more settings she could do this year. I am one of those final three. I am scheduled for November 28. It seems a little soon for me but I suppose I can cope with that.
Martus does a wonderful job with trees. She provides the ornaments but if you have certain ornaments you wish to be included, she will ensure they are there on the tree. I have some I wish to be included but I leave it to her to decided how it is done. She has not disappointed me yet. The first tree she did for me was beautiful and since Jared's presence is never guaranteed, I have continued to be lazy and call her. A plus for hiring her to do this is that she also will acquire the tree, decorate it, break it down and dispose of it. Do you see how lazy I am now?
When we lived in Pensacola, Jared and I would do this for ourselves. Since he would be home, we used it as time together as family knowing that it would not always be so later. Chao lei has asked when we will fetch our tree. I have told him of my plans. He was disappointed in the beginning but being him, he decided we will see how this year goes before deciding how we acquire next year's tree. He astounds me with his logic sometimes.
Martus is an ex pat here in Yokosuka. She lives not far from me and will not be required to experience all of the technicalities of a civilian accessing the base since I remain off base this tour. I see her now and then around the shops in town so it is surprising that I could forget to call her earlier. Perhaps it is because of June's birth. I was distracted? That is a fine excuse. I believe I will remain with that story.
Change is on the horizon though we do not know what that change will be. Jared has simply been told there may be change coming soon. We have ideas. We know what we hope for. We wait for the Navy to decide.
Occasionally, I sit and think of where I am versus where I have been.
I am a mother of two, wife of a US Navy Commander, university teacher and citizen of the United States. All four of these thing were by my choice. I could not be more satisfied with these things. They are a far cry from what I was and would likely have been had I made different choices.
I was a simple Chinese girl that did not expect much from life. I could expect to be a wife and mother. That was what my culture taught me. It is not that there is anything wrong being a wife and mother. I love that it is what I am. But in China, that is what you existed to be. In the west, I am more.
I am able to achieve goals for myself that would have been near impossible in China. I would not be a professor of computer science in a Chinese university. At best I could be an assistant. I would not be a Navy Commander's wife in China. My family was comfortable by Chinese standards but they could not afford to marry me to a naval officer. I am a mother to two children. Until recently, I would have been restricted to only one.
I continue to giggle each time I hear that China's "One Child" policy has been relaxed. This policy accounted for untold numbers of girl infants left to die because they were not sons. Now, there is a shortage of Chinese women for Chinese men to marry.
I have come far. I would change nothing of this long walk. I have had difficult times as everyone does. Still, the path was worth it. The good far exceeds the bad.
If you did not know, I am not an natural born citizen. I immigrated (legally) to the US almost twenty years ago and was naturalized in 2005. Part of that process was learning of this country, its customs and its privileges. One of those privileges is voting.
We could vote in China but that vote meant nothing since it was the government that decided who the candidate was. Even then, one could only vote in local elections. We had no say to the national leadership. Here in America, each person has a say in the leadership of the nation. Why do so many not exercise this right to help choose their government? I am lost for the reason.
I hear many complain of what officials they have yet they refuse to participate in elections. Each have their reasons; some not as convincing as others. But how can you complain if you have intentionally not participated? You have said "I do not have a preference."
Today, for those of us in Japan, election day. For those in CONUS it is tomorrow. It is the day to decide what this nation is to be. Voting is a privilege. It is one not everyone has.
Funny how one pays a professional to make photos and the favorite is one taken by a non-professional.
Jared made this picture as I was retrieving June to feed her. He took it without my knowledge, edited it and framed it. Now it is my favorite and I wonder of paying for others. To be fair, the woman we hired did not have unfettered access to June and I. Jared does. The laws of chance were on his side. That he converted it to black and white makes it more intimate I believe. Now the greatest difficulty is choosing which photos of the professional will grace our walls and table tops. I wonder if I can convince her to convert one or two of her photos to black and white? Would that be akin to asking an artist to repaint a painting to suit me? Then again, why bother? Jared seems to have some talent to take photos. I should put him to work recording his children growing up.
Our days have been pleasant with only some clouds. We decided a hike was in order so we went to Kawakubo Park. The hike can be as long as you wish but it is very popular so one must choose to ignore the sometimes crowd. As a reward though, at the end of the hike is a wonderful noodle shop where one may order a bowl of hot broth with udon. I am VERY fond of udon noodles.
Jared returned home with pockets full of Chao lei's sticks, leaves and pebbles that were discovered and deemed as absolutely essential to his well being. Jared considered that Chao lei would soon forget what was picked up but he quickly discovered a young boy does not pick up things and forgets what it was and why it was important enough to be picked up. When we returned to the car, Chao lei asked for very specific items he had picked up only to discover his father no longer had them. Jared sheepishly explained that he "had a hole in his pocket and they fell out." Now I believe he understands why I usually have a pocket full of "trash" when Chao lei and I return from a walk. I let him decide what to keep. Hopefully, his father has learned to do that also.
Rumors increase. Every captain is getting fired and every non-captain is getting a ship. It is nonsense. I believe it is more likely some captains are up for rotation. It is a natural event. One does not captain a ship permanently. They may not leave the theater but they do not remain in place aboard one ship. I will admit that I hope Jared is selected to a ship. He has finished command school and met all requirements. We will see though. I am proud of him in whatever way he serves but an evil part of me wishes for him to command a ship soon. It would quiet an overly loud sister-in-law bragging of my brother's new position. I suppose I must be the adult though and keep the evil part of me under control.
I think Saturday we will go to Taura Plum Park. I am told it is a good hike and there is an obstacle course for children at the top. It is supposed to be a sunny day.
Jared has discovered the hazards of keeping June alone. I do not believe he will volunteer to keep her alone all day again. It is not that June is difficult to keep for me. He is not accustomed to someone who does not do as he says because he said it. Well, he is accustomed to me but I have been the exception since he cannot punish me as he could one of his sailors and he does not care to be sworn at in Mandarin. I did spy him walking her though. She seemed quite happy to be out with him.
As a family, we are settling into our new routine. The major exercises are over for the year so we are returning to normal movements. I wonder if this year Jared will have dinner with Mother and Father again as the ship does port visits. Other than that, he goes to work and returns home each day. Almost as a normal husband! lol
Chao lei is happy his father is home but already asks when he leaves again. He has not learned as I have to not ask since the answer is always the same; I do not know. Of course, he has school now. We are fortunate that the DoD school system here has returned to in person attendance. Chao lei has rediscovered his enjoyment of school. He was becoming disenchanted with home school, or perhaps it was me. Regardless, the return to school was just in time. The Xbox is suffering from lack of use now. I return to news of how his day was,, what he and Scotty did, his "girlfriend Sade, and how nice his teacher, Miss Hatherill, is so nice.
I find I am becoming fond of remote instruction. Perhaps too much. It is easy to become used to a Zoom lecture. Not having endless questions as one attempts to teach is much easier and that only occurs in Zoom. The downside is learning is easier in person so lectures at the university are more productive for students. I suppose it is not about me though.
Now if we could only get the Navy to cease Covid restrictions, we will be normal again. I know, wishful thinking.
Today is my day. It is a day to do as I wish.
Jared is home and has received today free of work. He has claimed today as his day with June to enjoy father/ daughter time. What will they do is unknown to me.
A step closer to normal for us is Chao lei returns to in person education today. No more staying home with remote learning! It is a good thing since he was becoming uninterested in his school work. I will take him to school this morning then be free for the afternoon.
I am not sure to relax for this yet. It is the Navy, after all. It is notorious for change. One small event could change it all.
What will I do with my day? I have no idea. To be sure, a lengthy walk around the base is inevitable. That is bit so boring as it may sound. There are many lovely places in base. One may sit and watch the harbor activities. They are not strictly military ships moving about the harbor. There are several parks. As I have said before, the Japanese are fond of parks. That fondness has been carried onto the base.
If all else proves lacking, I can go shopping on the Blue Road. There are many shops to visit. Who knows, perhaps I will finally visit the kimono shop and see if there is one to suit me.
Excepting the mask and distancing mandates, it is almost as if, at least in the immediate area around the base, we are nearly normal.
Now, it is time to deliver Chao lei to school, wish Jared good day and kiss June and begin my solo day.
It can be surprising how enjoyable it is to just sit and watch. Watching the tugs move about the harbor is surprisingly relaxing. They are as bees hustling about accomplishing their deeds with determination. Even the occasional rain sprinkle cannot change my mood. Chao lei is enjoying watching the harbor's activities.
June is happy as usual providing I give her attention often enough. She also insists I speak to her often. So much so that if one were to visit my house it would be unnerving for them to witness my new habit of "talking to no one." I find it is as if am narrating my life for some unseen audience.
I must wonder of Jared's thoughts of this. He will probably just consider it another strange thing his wife does. Before he can do that though, he must be home. The Navy has kept him busy this summer. It is hopeful that when he does return they will allow him to remain for more than only a week this time.
I am happy though. The harbor is relaxing. My babies are happy and healthy. My husband will come home... eventually. What more could I ask for?
She is so sweet. And quiet! (So far)
She was born on the 24th at 2358. Two more minutes and she would have shared Father Bing's birthday. She is 18.25 inches and 7.1 pounds.
Once again, Jared will leave the ship first to greet his daughter then immediately return to complete his duties before returning home. When this will happen remains a mystery since there is no word of a return yet.
Meanwhile, I will rest. A picture is coming.
I have tried but it has been a night and morning of contractions. They do not lessen. In fact, they increase in severity as they come ever closer. It seems Jared will lose the race. Again.
I am between the two desires of my heart. One is to get June out of me. I wish to see her face and hold her in my arms. I will not lie. I also wish the pain to stop but mostly, I wish to hold her.
Then there is the other desire that Jared is present for her birth. He was not for Chao lei and I saw the regret he had for not being there. What he did to make amends was driven too much by guilt. Love was a driver but guilt more. I do not wish such for him.
I also worry of Chao lei. Not for the birth. We have discussed that very much and I believe he understands what is to happen. My worry is when his father comes home and focuses on June, which would be natural I think. I worry if he will feel ignored or less than his sister.
Jared has been an amazing father. I believe he will work out how to do this but a mother worries of these things.
I do believe I will not finish this day as a mother of one but two. Jared will return when he returns and will be among the first to leave the ship even if only long enough to see his daughter.
The base is beginning to lock down again. I am allowed to go from home to the base and back only, and horror of horrors, the beaches are again closed. Almost everything off-base is off-limits. Yay.
It is not as if I have been enjoying any freedom anyway. June has me laying or reclining somewhere. It is difficult at times to sit up enough to see my laptop. Especially since I usually do not have one. lol (well, it is funny to me) I believe Chao lei is becoming weary of being Mommy's little helper and is considering himself as Mommy's little gopher. He asks when his father returns and is not happy with "I do not know."
I thought for a time last night that June had decided to come now. I was only moments from calling Dorothy or an ambulance. A week early is not so bad but I wish Jared as much time as possible to return so he is present for one of his children's birth. He was in Japan for a few days only not here. That is a cruel thing to discover. "They are in Sasebo" is not what this mother wishes to hear.
When Jared does get home, he has much to do. The baby's bed remains in the box it arrived in. His plans for the baby's room have not even begun. I believe it is to make up for those things not being done that he is still buying June clothes. I fear if he does not stop she will have clothes she will never wear. Her closet now contains more clothing than mine, though to be honest, that is not an accomplishment. She has more shoes than Chao lei and me combined. I have asked him to slow his purchasing but "She would be just too cute" in them.
My wish for the day is for Jared to get home. Now. It will be then that I can present June with no feelings of guilt that he missed another one. Then again... Jared's treatment of me the last time he missed was phenomenal. No... we will wait... hopefully.
It is getting more difficult to convince June to remain where she is for a short while longer. Contractions are becoming more frequent but Jared is not home yet. I find myself trying to distract myself as if it will stop the contractions or delay the birth. Silly, I know.
Chao lei has decided he is not fond of my contractions. He tells my tummy to "stop hurting my mom" as if it would pay any attention to him. lol I am subjected to endless questions of what he should expect, what is happening now and will I still love him when June is born. The last question shocked me. What have I done to cause him to believe my love for him would change because June is born? I do reassure him there will be no change in how I love him. I have warned him that babies require much more attention than a big boy such as he but it will not mean I love him any less. It will be necessary to make time for him. We will continue with many of our customary activities.
Lately, I find myself living vicariously through other people's adventures since I can not go for myself. Adventurous bloggers are my lifeline. Chao lei does not care since they are only pictures but I do. It causes me to earnestly plan our own adventures once June is born and, hopefully, my back recovers without surgery. There are many places in Japan I have yet to hike. I have not climbed Mt. Fuji. How can you say you have lived in Japan without having done that? I need only acquire the baby carrier and have a husband about to hike with.
It seems Japan is over CoVid. The state of emergency has been lifted and all limits of businesses are no more. That does not mean the Navy has done so. We remain limited on what we are permitted to do. Japan says we may return to normal, for now, while the Navy says we may not. It is tempting to return to normal off base while following the restrictions on base but the Navy's reach extends beyond the gates so I do not. I do tend to believe that my Asian (though not Japanese) appearance would help me to get away with it though. White people in general seem unable to clearly see the distinction between different Asian people; "You all look the same." Still, integrity demands I do not attempt such a thing.
I believe the race between Jared and June will go to June. Once again, Jared will be allowed to disembark the ship first to meet his daughter. She will be denied meeting him earlier. Such is life in the Navy.
