I have experienced my first American football game! The game was what is named here "The Civil War." It is Oregon State University against the University of Oregon.
To begin I must ask how it is they chose their mascots. My observations have been mascots are chosen for the aggression or bravery they are known for. How would one find such things in a beaver or a duck? Perhaps because the beaver works steadily and is an accomplished architect it was chosen. The duck, however, shows no such traits. Rather, it is known as an object to be hunted. The ability to be in the rain may be an influence but how does that strike fear into an opponent? At the least the beaver has formidable teeth to bite you with.
The game was very exciting! The stadium was so noisey at times as to have difficulty hearing any one person. The energetic manner in which everyone conducted themselves had the effect of adding energy to my own actions. I think I now more thoroughly understand the meaning of "fan."
I was also instructed that I favored the Ducks. This is unfortunate since it is they who lost. It is fortunate I favor their colors rather than the beavers. Who would not choose green and gold over orange and black? In any case it seems I have no choice for the matter since even Father Bing attended University of Oregon.
I will not pretend to understand all that I saw or even much of the playing of the game. I will say I enjoyed myself tremendously and would wish to see another game.
